thru September 21 - Oil Paintings by Luke Allsbrook - Opening Friday, May 23 and continuing through Sunday, September 21, 2008, the Arboretum will host a landscape painting exhibit by internationally known artist Luke Allsbrook in the Baker Exhibit Center. The exhibit is titled "Our Precious Land: Visions and Scenes of North Carolina" and presents oil paintings on canvas that reflect the beauty of farmland across the mountain region and other natural and created landscapes. thru September 9 - Fifth Annual Exhibition - Works by UNC Asheville art students and recent graduates will be featured in the Selected Student Exhibit on view August 14-September 9 at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery. This fifth annual exhibition showcases upper-level student work produced in the past year. A closing reception will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the gallery. thru September 25 - "NO FEAR OF CONTENT" - Flood Gallery Fine Art Center is proud to present the first Asheville solo exhibition of artist Jim Buonaccorsi, entitled "No Fear of Content." Buonaccorsi's work, on view August 23rd through September 27th, acts as salt in the open wound of complacency and translates life's fears and meanings into a universal language. This underlying theme essentially discredits the idea of "art for art sake." Buonaccorsi's work is saturated with historical references, and offers its viewers an opportunity to change history by not repeating it.

September 13 - Life's Rich Pageant: A Centennial Celebration of The Eight - 5-7PM. Free with Museum Membership or Admission This fall, the Asheville Art Museum is delighted to present works from all eight artists: Robert Henri (1865-1929), George Luks (1867-1933), William Glackens (1870-1938), John Sloan (1871-1951), Everett Shinn (1876-1953), Maurice Prendergast (1859-1924), Ernest Lawson (1873-1939) and Arthur Bowen Davies (1862-1928), celebrating the centennial anniversary of the landmark 1908 show at the Macbeth Gallery. The exhibition showcases the collection of Mina and Stephen Weiner whose great affection for the group has fueled over forty years of collecting. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, September 12, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. and a special reception will be held the following evening.

To visit the largest basswood tree in Chimney Rock Park, a moderately strenuous off-trail excursion is necessary. This is a state champion tree with a circumference of more than 13ft. It grows in a secluded cove with other large neighbors. Be prepared for rocks, slopes, and rhododendron thickets along the way.

September 20 - Fall Colors Autorama - The Great Smoky Mountains Region, of the Antique Automobile Club of America, is sponsoring their 10th annual Fall Colors Autorama, a vintage, antique, classic and street rod show. The event will take place on Saturday, September 20th from 9:00am to 4:00pm, on Hendersonville's historic downtown Main Street. It is an open show and all modes and ages of transportation are welcome. The entry fee for a vehicle registered before September 6th is $12. The day of show entry fee is $15. Marjane Satrapi adapted her poignant graphic novel into this 2007 animated film. An Academy Award Nominated film for Best Animated Feature, this coming of age story of a young girl during the Iranian Revolution in the 1970s combines the universal trials of adolescence with a unique perspective on the history of Iran. Created in the same visual style as her graphic novel, Persepolis is both political and personal, commenting on the consequences of war to the individual.

In her portable studio she will walk us through the process step-by-step. An Asheville native, 25 year-old Larson has recently returned to the area. Large flocks , sometimes numbering as many as 500, can be seen soaring over the Park on their way to South America for the winter.
